_ 1/4 show

Lots going on behind the scenes here. Graduation and moving. Starting up a lot of new projects.
One of the completed projects (the word for which I should really document here) is a show in conjunction with the publication of the work in _ Quarterly. The opening/release party is this Saturday, June 6 at the Box Factory (865 Florida St, San Francisco)
And I promise to document the work soon as I get set up down south.

Thanks!!!
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who came out and contributed to the opening of the Locality show, and made it such a success!!! Seriously, the level of work and the number of people that came out to support was better than any of us could have hoped for. Â I am hoping to have pictures from the opening up soon.
And if you missed out on the opening, or want more of the greatness, come to the closing party, on April 16th, 8pm – 11pm.
Thanks again!!!

Locality

So, next week is the opening of the big show that I have been working on for the past few months.  This was my baby, and I am curating/organizing/artist wrangling this one with a number of amazing people, most notably my co-conspirator on this Taylor Tschider.
For the show, we wanted to focus on the idea of the local. What does it mean to be from, and to live in, a particular place? What does it mean to interact with the world as an individual, an artist, and a citizen in this time of “the world is flat†globalization.  Over 30 artists have worked cross-media and created work that address these issues around the local.

Opening April 2nd, 8pm – 11pm
Closing April 16th, 8pm – 11pm

Kicker Studio show
A day late and a dollar short and all of that….
But things have been busy, and I haven’t had time to update this as much as I would like to.  At any rate, I have some work (specifically a sound piece) up at Kicker Studio here in SF. It’s a great show headed up by my friend Jody Medich.

Show

So, my show was last week. Here is some documentation of the work.
The work that I did for the show are three different texts that were generated from a Processing sketch that I wrote. I was interested in William Burrough’s cut-up technique and using that as a starting point. So the sketch that I wrote does a web search on a term, returning the entire text from the top ten site related to that search term. Those texts are then broken into sentences, brought together, and reassembled at random into new texts. For this show, I chose to only assemble paragraphs. I choose related search terms for this — “free market,” “drunkenness,” and “decadence” — with each work representing a different term.
Hit me up if you are interested in the source code (its a bit loose to send out into the world at the moment).
Below are details of the work. Click on them for a close up.

Back in the Saddle
So, I really haven’t been posting much lately, but I have been really under the gun with the end of classes last week, this trip to Europe that coming up in a few weeks, work, and a few other assorted long term projects.
On the more immediate front, I have also been working on some new work for a show that will be going up at the end of June. (I will post the details when I get them, but the theme of the show is “Best Friends”) But the show goes up a few days after I get back from Europe, so I have been trying to get the work done before I go. I have been working with a new process, by combining low resolution GIFs into an HDR image. You can see one of the results up top. There are some problems that I am running into, but hopefully they will be solved by the time the show goes up.

Europe and Fairs
So barrring some unforseen event, I am going to be going to Europe this June for some of the art fairs. I will be going to the Venice Biennale, Art Basel, Documenta, and skulptur projekte muenster. I will be going with my dean, Okwui Enwezor, who curated Documenta 11, and so we will be meeting with a lot of the artists and curators as we go to these different places. I am very excited about this, and it looks like it’s going be a lot of fun.

the blood brothers
The Blood Brothers, who are old, good friends of mine, were in town tonight, so I got to see them. Which was a nice excuse to take a break for doing schoolwork. I don’t get to see them that often, as they still live in Seattle, and I haven’t for about six years or so, but I get to see them a few times a year when they come through on tour.

Lonesome Lover

If you happen to be in SF some time before March 31st, I would recommend checking out the Lonesome Lover show at the Grey Area Gallery there. I went to the opening on Saturday, and was quite impressed with it, not only with the space itself (which is quite nice and spacious, including a small storefront and studios in back) but also with the curation of the show. In talking with some of the people that work there, they have a different curator for each show, and with this show, they were able to have five different artists with a similar style and voice in the same show, but without stepping on each other’s feet. Very impressive. Check it out if you get the chance.
